Nettium’s 2017 Year in Review

What a year 2017 was for Nettium! Fwhew! I know, I know, it’s already almost the end of the first month into 2018. But we’ll still love to share some of our most memorable highlights from 2017 with you, and how we’re going even BIGGER this year!

We transformed the experience our people have at Nettium

Our Employee Experience team!

We launched our employee experience initiative in 2017! It transforms the way we approach human resources with the People & Culture arm for a first-class people experience and the Operations arm for efficient HR functions.

A brand new Nettiumer and his Buddy

It’s not always easy fitting into a new place (no matter how awesome the place is), and we understand that. So, we created the Buddy Program that allows Nettiumers pair up with newbies during their onboarding and show them the ropes, answer (all) their deepest life questions, and introduce them to other amazing Nettiumers.

We went out there…

Nettiumers on hand to talk to students at the career fairs

We were present at some of the leading career expositions; the Malaysia Multimedia University and the Asia Pacific University career fairs. We got the opportunity to meet some you amazing people who expressed interest in joining us. Check out current openings at careers.nettium.net/vacancy

Students hack away into the evening during FaceHack2017 @ Nettium, Kuala Lumpur

We hosted the massively successful 48-hour FaceHack2017 Hackathoncompetition organised by the University of Malaya. About 100 students and tech enthusiasts gathered at Nettium to build and validate innovative AI facial recognition ideas and technology, with several Nettiumers volunteering to mentor the participants.

“Here, this is how I think we can build the HR bot in 24 hours”

We also worked with the Asia Pacific University Kuala Lumpur, sponsoring an equally fruitful hackathon, APU-Nettium HR BOT Hackathon. The 24-hour race pitted young participants against time to create innovative chatbots for the HR industry!

… and gave back to the community

We started the year with a visit to the Budimas Charitable Foundation’s Budimas Orion in Kuala Lumpur, home to 36 orphaned and underprivileged children. Nettiumers took their Sundays off to spend time with these incredible children, sharing various fun activities like board games. Yay!

Nettiumers raised more than RM7,000 that that went to the centre’s groceries, lunch, rental and everyday expenses including school fees for the children

Volunteers from Nettium also visited the Malaysia Lotus Charity Care Centre in Selangor. The centre is home to more than 51 underprivileged people (26 children aged between 11 months and 17 years old).

We held our first ever blood donation drive with members of the National Blood Centre (Pusat Darah Negara-PDN) and collected 31 pints of blood; enough to save 100 lives! Blood supply is important for each state to save the sick and road accident victims, especially during festive seasons.

We hosted some other cool events too…

We hosted the 2-day Web Development for Absolute Beginners workshop organised by Women Who Code, a non-profit dedicated to inspiring women to pursue careers in technology. More than 30 enthusiastic women attended and learned about building and hosting websites with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and basic programming concepts.

The Deep Learning Malaysia community partnered with us to host their AI/Deep Learning meeting at our offices. The discussions covered artificial intelligence, deep learning, GPU, CUDA and other fascinating technologies that are disrupting the way we live, work and play in the world today.

Participants from Nettium and The Front End Malaysia

Held a 2-day weekend Vue + Firebase workshop with participants and facilitators from The FrontEnd Malaysia and Nettium coming together to create a massively successful event with much learning, food and excitement!

We also had quarterly stepping challenges that recognised the top 10 every quarter in 2017

An all-year step challenge to find the top 10 Nettiumers who will get an all-expense-paid trip to Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. The top 10 participants walked 28,447,016 steps or 21,676.63 km!

We learned a lot and got recognised

For five days, we went through the rigorous Design Sprint framework created by Google Ventures to help organisations solve critical business problems using design, prototyping, and testing ideas with customers. We learned the best ways to approach problems, how to decide what challenges to tackle and getting customer feedback to refine the product.

The Nettium team with the award led by CEO, Lam Mun Choong (centre)

We were acknowledged in the SME100 Awards, an annual recognition of the top performing SMEs in Malaysia and Singapore. The award is based on our growth (turnover, profit and market share) and resilience (best practices, sustainability and vision) over the last three years, thanks to our amazing, hardworking people!

In the end, it’s the journey that matters…

If you think our xmas costumes are crazy, you should have seen our Halloween party

Our Annual Dinner was a great way to round up the awesome year. While we had a theme of green, white and red, Nettiumers showed up for the fun evening the most ridiculous costumes you can imagine! And we loved every one of them, just see the pictures!

The Christmas season is even more intriguing when you get to participate in the merry Secret Santa gift exchange with other Nettiumers. You get to make three wishes and hope for the best, while fulfilling someone else’s wishes.

What’s next? We’ll let Lam Mun Choong, CEO of Nettium, share his vision for 2018…

“For us, it’s all about GROWTH. We’ve grown non-stop for the last 8 years, starting with a team of 8 and now have 330 people in two countries. 2018 will be an exciting year for learning, growth opportunities and new experiences

We recognise that to stay ahead, we must constantly transform ourselves and develop our people into leaders of the future. We’ll develop our high-potential young teams for greater leadership responsibilities and welcome enthusiastic people with fresh ideas that will help raise our game and make Nettium to place to be.

Our management teams will have new additions, renovate our workspace to make it an even better place to work and connect our people better with a refreshed vision and core values.

We’ve co-organized beneficial coding classes and hackathons and we’ll expand our collaborations with universities, charitable and non-profit organizations to provide learning and development opportunities for an inclusive society.

This year, we’ll provide more exciting learning opportunities around basic and advanced coding, as well as disruptive technologies like machine learning and AI.

We’ll experiment a lot with fun activities that’ll help us build our team and culture; things we’ve never done before. Let us surprise you; follow and watch our social media in 2018 to find out more.”

— Lam Mun Choong

These are just some highlights of an incredible 2017. This year, we’re looking to go out and get even more done! And we’re looking for outstanding people to join the Nettium family and help us achieve even greater heights!
